Our specialist departments for film, video and sound: subtitling and transcription

Films and videos are becoming increasingly important because they communicate quickly and sustainably. Using cleverly integrated subtitles or a stylised voice-over, Apostroph makes your moving images accessible to a foreign-speaking audience. In turn, the transcription converts your audio documents into a written form so that they can be published, shared and archived.

Transcription, subtitling and voice-over by Apostroph

Apostroph subtitles are read around the world

Subtitling requires specially trained translators who are not only fluent in the source and target languages, but also in what is called spotting. This is the definition of a time window during a speech scene. Since reading takes more time than listening, the spoken text has to be summarised in a limited number of characters, taking the timing into account.

Our specialists are equipped with a great deal of linguistic talent and can communicate both the content and the emotions with a minimum of words. And you can rest assured that the message of your video or film will be well received internationally. We subtitle company portraits, image films, commercials, interviews and social media videos, but are also familiar with film and TV productions.

Voice-over – the elegant solution

A voice-over is particularly suitable for longer videos such as company portraits or image films. This relieves the eye and allows the audience to concentrate fully on the action. In addition to our translation professionals, we also have professional speakers in a number of languages.

With their pleasant voice, their feel for the right amount of emotion and their perfect timing, they ensure an enjoyable listening experience. Meanwhile, our specialists take care of the technology and integrate the audio track into your film.

Automated subtitling

Technology standard like in Hollywood

In our “film studio”, our subtitling professionals work with state-of-the-art tools such as Studio Subtitling from SDL. The clever thing about this program is that there’s no need for tedious switching between video and translation software, saving us time and our corporate customers money.

We make audio documents readable with transcription

Transcription is the transformation of a sound document into a written document. This is helpful, for example, if you need a written version of a lively brainstorming session. Or if you want to put an exciting interview online for others to read. Written audio documents are also easier to archive, and the search for keywords and passages is much easier.

We transcribe:

  • Speeches and presentations
  • Meetings
  • Telephone and online conferences
  • Brainstorming sessions
  • Seminars
  • Interviews and discussions
  • Surveys
  • Podcasts
  • Journalistic, scientific and legal audio content

Apostroph uses traditional transcriptions in four different ways

A complete transcription records what is said with all atmospheric elements such as applause, or when speakers clear their throats or use special emphasis. The content version omits any background noise. The cleaned version reproduces the content precisely, and eliminates elements such as repetitions and slips of the tongue. The abridged transcription focuses on the essence of what has been said and results in a grammatically correct text characterised by a harmonious flow of reading.

Automated transcription: fast and inexpensive

If the document is merely for information purposes or to be used as an editing template, then machine execution of a transcription makes sense. Using sophisticated speech recognition software, we transcribe your audio document quickly and at low cost. Even though this kind of editor has certain limitations, it still scores with some technical features such as an automatic timestamp and the identification of different speakers.

Shine with creative translations in all languages

For subtitles, a word-for-word translation is virtually impossible because as soon as emotions or cultural elements come into play, things get complicated. This is why our specialised language professionals need ideas how to accurately convey what is being said in just a few words. There are parallels to creative translations here. With transcreation, we ensure that your slogan or your originally worded marketing texts also create linguistic highlights in other target markets.
